AI for Nonprofits: Write Grant Proposals with Microsoft's Copilot

Updated: Nov 25

Writing a grant application can be daunting and stressful. However, the process becomes much more manageable with the help of Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word. To ensure Copilot effectively helps you, we need to get really good at the "art of prompting," a.k.a. writing an insightful, compelling, and detailed prompt.

What makes a compelling prompt?

Microsoft Copilot AI for nonprofits works best when you give it the info it needs to assist you in the specific ways you need it to. Let's then dedicate a second to understanding the basics of a prompt: A prompt is a set of instructions or guidelines you provide to Copilot to help it generate the desired content. The more specific and detailed your prompt, the better the output. When writing a prompt for a grant application, it’s essential to include all the necessary components and provide clear instructions on what you want Copilot to generate.

In this episode, Jess shares that the four ingredients to writing a compelling prompt include goal, context, source, and expectations.

  1. Goal: an objective or target someone that needs to be achieved. It represents the end toward which effort is directed. They provide direction and motivation. This must reflect the desired outcome you are looking for (i.e., generate an executive summary)

  2. Context: the specific circumstances or conditions that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood and assessed. (i.e., what is this for, who is the audience, and where will it live).

  3. Source: the origin or starting point from which something comes or can be obtained. It can refer to a place, person, or thing that provides information, materials, or resources. (i.e., documents with project plans)

  4. Expectations: the assumptions and specific guidelines about the prompt output to fulfill your needs. (i.e., word count, tone and manner, grammatical style)

Writing a grant application can be challenging, but with the help of Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word, you can simplify the process and create a compelling proposal. By crafting a well-structured prompt, you can guide Copilot in generating the needed content, saving you time and effort.

Happy grant proposal writing, and get your funding! 🎯
